Lot 2519
GERMANY. Bundesrepublik Deutschland. 1949-present. Cent 2002 F (Copper-plated Steel, 16 mm, 2.32 g, 12 h), 'Drehende Sterne' ('turning stars'), Stuttgart. F - 2002 Oak twig surrounded by twelve radially aligned stars. Rev. 1 / EURO / CENT Globe focusing on Europe. Jaeger 482 var. (radially aligned stars). Officially cancelled. Tiny marks, otherwise, virtually as struck.

German Euro and Cent production started prior to 1997 with designing all country specific features. All German euro coins, like the European flag, feature twelve stars. The first design featured the stars arranged radially, with one point of each star facing outward from the center creating a rotated appearance. In contrast, the stars on the European flag all point straight upward, with one tip at the top. The discrepancy between the coins and the EU flag was only noticed after production began. The European Commission objected, leading to a halt in minting. Existing coins were destroyed, and production resumed shortly after new dies were made.
